When the Moldy Peaches album first hit, my roommates and I played the crap out of it. Those night sitting in our lady punk house, listening to music while reading or making art came at a time in internet history when there was no youtube or facebook to consume our hours. Instead, we'd sing along "New York City's like a graveyard..." with no premonition that soon that song would stop being played as 9/11 made that song's lyrics a little eerie. When we found out that Moldy Peaches were playing in nearby Columbia, MO we made our trek down I-70 to visit a town I now know so well. The show was at MOJO's, it was my first visit to town, later I would know this venue as well as any in Lawrence. After their performance, I snapped a film pic of Kimya and asked her what was her relationship to fashion for a photo spread I was doing for Clamor Magazine (see issue 15, page 30). Then post-Moldy Peaches I had many great opportunities to see Kimya perform, most memorably, at the Lawrence show for Plan-It-X Fest outside of Solidarity! Revolutionary Center and Radical Library. That's the first time I heard "It's Been Raining" and watched as an entire group of punks cried their eyes out under the setting sun's protective cover. In those days I was Livejournal friends with Kimya, and enjoyed reading about her perspective on the world, in a pre-social media time it felt so amazing to read the words of someone you identified with. When it was suddenly announced that Kimya Dawson would play a show at the Vacant Farm arts warehouse space in Kansas City, I knew I had to make it and enjoy an opportunity to photograph and film the performance with my newer and more modern equipment. It was one of the first warm Spring nights of the year, as about a hundred kids sat on concrete floors to hear her stories and songs. The show was delightful, as all her shows are. She closes her eyes when she sings but interrupts songs to tell stories and connect with the audience in a way that only those of us who love DIY shows can appreciate.  Enjoy a few pics from the night below.  <3
